It's reminiscent of the original in both look and functionality, but comes with a few new notable features that makes tracking easier, like a small bar on the display that shows activity progress. It's also possible to set up audible alerts that nudge you to get up and move. There's a backlight option now too so you can see the screen in the dark and like the previous model, the vívofit 2 gets about a year of battery life on one charge. The device works alongside other apps like RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal, as well as Garmin Connect, a free online fitness community that lets users track sleep patterns and trends, join online challenges, earn badges and so on. It doesn't have own heart-rate monitor, but works with compatible heart-rate monitors.

In addition to RunKeeper and MapMyFitness, which were previously announced Misfit partners, there are a few other big companies that will be taking advantage of possibilities afforded by the new SDK. Yesterday, Misfit announced a partnership with IFTTT that allows users to automate tracking with the Shine, such as automatically logging sleep into a Google spreadsheet.
