16.05.17. Garmin's vívosmart 3 finally takes fitness tracking to the gym. Garmin is looking to solve one of the biggest issues facing wearables with its latest release, the vívosmart 3: How can an activity tracker be useful in the gym?  The $140 vívosmart 3 is a shot at making a more well-rounded wearable for everyone, with the added bonus of new weight room-specific features. The vívosmart 3 tracks runs, counts steps, and logs your sleep, like its competitors from Fitbit, the Alta HR and the Charge 2. The strength training function is built to log workouts directly on the device, with individual rep counting and even a way to automatically identify the specific exercise being performed via the device's sensors.  This could be Garmin's real edge against Fitbit in the wearable wars. The battery life runs in line with Garmin's five-day estimates.

08.01.15. Garmin updates the Vivofit with new features. Garmin introduced the second iteration of its fitness tracker,  is widely considered the best on the market — vívofit 2 ($129). It's reminiscent of the original in both look and functionality, but comes with a few new notable features that makes tracking easier, like a small bar on the display that shows activity progress. It's also possible to set up audible alerts that nudge you to get up and move. There's a backlight option now too so you can see the screen in the dark and like the previous model, the vívofit 2 gets about a year of battery life on one charge. The device works alongside other apps like RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal, as well as Garmin Connect, a free online fitness community that lets users track sleep patterns and trends, join online challenges, earn badges and so on. It doesn't have own heart-rate monitor, but works with compatible heart-rate monitors.

08.09.14. Garmin Vivosmart - part activity tracker and part smartwatch. Garmin’s first activity tracker vívofit just did’t have a lot of features to make it stand apart from its peers. But the company’s latest activity tracker, vívosmart, does just that. It combines good looks, activity tracking with smartphone alerts and controls — too bad it’s a touch pricey. The $169 band features a hidden touch-sensitive OLED display. The band of course tracks the wearer’s activities and since it’s a Garmin, hooks up to the company’s other products including its heart monitor and activity cameras. Vívosmart also acts as a notification device for a connected smartphone, vibrating for incoming text, email, call, calendar reminders and more.
